Depending on where you are in life may determine how you feel about their searching and drifting. Maybe their search is bittersweet or noble or hopeful. But you can tell even if they are drifting they are not totally passive. Even in the sport they partake in: fishing. They were pretty much spectators in everything and in terms of action did very little.

One thing I picked up on in The Sun Also Rises is that many of the characters were looking to be happy or fulfilled by things outside of themselves: traveling, fine foods and drinks, the spectacle of bullfighting. There were no more automatically accepted values, no grand narrative to follow, modernity was hitting developed countries which had seen a new dark side of history with WW1 and if you weren't one of the elite in wealth you were basically socially and historically drifting. In the time between the wars there was a sense of drift among many in his generation. The mentality of "the lost generation" and the idea of drifting is important to note. I still like reading but I’m too lazy to sit down and actually do it. I’m now in college and I’m an English Major so I feel like I need to start picking it up again. Then with school beating the enjoyment of reading out of me and admittedly me getting a cell phone I lost all interest in reading (I also “didn’t have time.”). I’m ranting now, but I used to love reading back in elementary and middle school and would read books well above my reading level. I need to read more and hopefully I can get back into it. Right now I want to read The DaVinci Code, The Road, I want to explore Kurt Vonnegut and Douglas Adams, and other books and authors as well. I just grinded on the last 4 chapters of The Sun Also Rises over the last day and I had been reading it for quite some time. I’ve been terrible about starting books and not finishing them, and just not reading in general. I have a lot of books I’m wanting to read.
